Scissors Used by Midwife Maude Watson Flood

Scissors to cut the newborn's umbilical cord were the only instrument a midwife was allowed to carry in her bag. After the state government began regulating midwives in the 1920s, gloves and instruments other than scissors were forbidden, because midwives were not supposed to enter the birth canal.
