In the early twentieth century, the midwife’s responsibility for a new mother and baby lasted from the middle months of pregnancy to several weeks after the baby was born. Sometimes the midwife sewed clothes for the newborn and stayed on after the birth to help the new mother and baby. African American women also sometimes served as wet nurses for white mothers.
