Pieced Quilt, date and maker unknown

The quilt represented the conflict between traditional midwifery and scientific medicine. Public health nurses disapproved of the quilt that black midwives sometimes spread on the floor so that a woman could give birth kneeling or stooping, rather than lying in bed.
