New City Hospital, 1912

In 1912 Lynchburg Hospital, for African Americans and "charity cases," both black and white, opened on Federal Street. City Council and the Health Department, which had been founded just two years before, operated the hospital.

Twelve years later Virginia Baptist Hospital on Rivermont Avenue was founded for whites only.
