"Whirlwind" on Tape

In January the R. Walter Johnson Tennis Video Project committee announced the completion of the video of Dr. Johnson’s life, "Dr. R. Walter ‘Whirlwind’ Johnson: The Legacy of a Life of Service to Others."

According to the box cover, the "videotape tells the story of Dr. Johnson and his contributions to others through the sport of tennis. Dr. Johnson taught not only tennis skills, but also the life skills of perseverance, hard work, self-respect, and self-discipline. The videotape is divided into two parts. Part I includes biographical information about Dr. Johnson and interviews with individuals who describe their experiences during summers spent on his court. It covers the basic facts and could be used alone. Part II covers Dr. Johnson’s other interests and the ways in which he influenced people beyond the teaching of tennis skills."

The video was several years in the making. Committee members were Helen M.Witt and Connie Kelley, co-chairs; Ethel R. Miller, Waltee J. Moore, Shelley M. Scott, W.E. Clark III, Kyle Thornhill, and videographer J. David Wells. Ken West at Lynchburg College and Joseph Berryman, Carla Heath, and Willie Thornhill from the Legacy Project served as advisors for the project.

The video is suitable for classroom use; each part is approximately 25 minutes long. To obtain a copy, contact Helen Witt 434-929-7506 (mshele@lynchburg.net) or J. David Wells 434-385-4040 (davewells7@aol.com)
